Birds at The Wilds

The Wilds is recognized by the National Audubon Society as an Important Bird Area and by the Ohio Division of Wildlife as a unique area important to Ohio’s grassland-sensitive species.

At The Wilds, we track kestrel, bluebird, tree swallow, house wren, and barn owl populations. There are 20 nest boxes for kestrels to utilize. In 2021, 29 young kestrels fledged from these boxes.

Of the 39 bluebird boxes, three were home to bluebirds which had four young fledge; 32 were used by tree swallows, which had 140 fledge; and eight were used by house wrens, which had 43 fledglings.

Seventeen barn owl chicks, two adult males, and two new adult females received their identification bands. Since 2015, when the barn owl banding project began, 90 young have fledged and been banded.
