The Wilds Hosts Kite Flying Weekend May 16 and 17
Cumberland, OH (May 5, 2009) – The Wilds will host the
first of several theme weekends this season beginning with “On
The Fly” May 16 and 17, 2009. Visitors will have the opportunity
to enjoy kite flying from atop the Wilds’ Visitor Center
hilltop while also learning about wildlife that takes to the
air.
“On The Fly” takes place 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both
days, and is free to visitors. Enjoy a panoramic view at an elevation
of over 1,200 feet overlooking the Wilds’ managed animal
areas while flying kites, creating craft projects, and learning
about things that fly.
Visitors of all ages can learn about the importance of airborne
members of the ecosystem – birds, bats, insects, and seeds
that float in the wind – from the Wilds’ conservation
education staff.
Craft kits for making and decorating your own kite, bird feeder,
or pinwheel out of recycled materials will be available for $5.
Proceeds will be used to support the Butterfly Habitat and other
conservation work of the Wilds.
Visitors are welcome to bring their own kites, purchase a kit
to make their own, or purchase a kite at the Wilds Gift Market.
No pre-registration is required to participate in the “On
The Fly” program. Safari Transport tours will be available
throughout the day for the normal fees.
The Wilds is open for Safari Transport tours from 10 a.m. to
4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays in May, Sept., and Oct., seven days
a week in June, July and August, plus Memorial Day and Labor
Day.
The mission of the Wilds, an independent, nonprofit organization,
is to advance conservation through science, education, and personal
experience. For more information, visit www.thewilds.org or call
