PAST EVENTS


ON THE FLY WEEKEND
MAY 16 and 17, 2009
10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Enjoy kite flying from atop the Wilds’ Visitor Center hilltop with panoramic views at an elevation of over 1,200 feet overlooking the Wilds' managed animal areas!

Visitors of all ages can learn about the importance of airborne members of the ecosystem – birds, bats, insects, and seeds that float in the wind – from the Wilds’ conservation education staff.

Craft kits for making and decorating your own kite, bird feeder, or pinwheel out of recycled materials will be available for $5. Proceeds will be used to support the Butterfly Habitat and other conservation work of the Wilds.

Visitors are welcome to bring their own kites, purchase a kit to make their own, or purchase a kite at the Wilds Gift Market.

FREE to all participants.
Optional craft kits $5.
No pre-registration required.

NATURE ART WEEKEND
June 13 and 14, 2009
10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Enjoy hands-on arts and crafts activities and demonstrations in this "Naturally Recycled" program that takes place on the Wilds Visitor Center hilltop.

Visitors of all ages can learn about the importance of conservation and how common items found in and around the home can be used and reused to create beautiful works of art.

Craft kits for making and decorating reed wall hangings, bird feeders and picture frames out of natural and recycled materials will be available to purchase. Proceeds will be used to support the Butterfly Habitat and other conservation work of the Wilds.

Artists of all abilities are invited to sketch, draw and paint pictures of the Wilds' beautiful landscapes and unique wildlife.

Children can choose to send their artwork to school children in Namibia, delivered by a Wilds conservation education staff member who will be visiting the country this summer.

In addition to the craft kits, visitors are welcome to bring their own art materials or purchase an art materials kit at the Wilds Gift Market.

SURVIVAL DAY CAMP WEEKEND
August 15 and 16, 2009
10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Learn how to plan and prepare for outdoor adventures while enjoying demonstrations and creative crafts on the Wilds Visitor Center hilltop during this special "Survival Day Camp" theme weekend.

Visitors of all ages can learn from the Wilds' conservation education staff about the importance of planning ahead while preparing for outdoor adventures, as well as how to use a map and compass for orientation.

Earn a Wilds Wilderness Survival Certificate after successfully completing the one-hour Letterboxing Survival Course. Letterboxing involves using a compass, pacing and following clues that lead you on an exciting adventure. The course includes stations for learning to build a fire and shelter. There is a small fee to participate in the course. Proceeds will be used to support conservation work at the Wilds.

Visitors are welcome to bring their own survival tools, craft a free survival tool, or purchase a field pack at the Wilds Gift Market.

CREEPY CRAWLY WEEKEND
October 17 and 18, 2009
10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Enjoy hands-on activities, demonstrations and creative crafts around the Johnson Visitor Center while also learning about Ohio's odd and creepy animals during this special "Creepy Crawly" theme weekend.

Enjoy a panoramic view at an elevation of over 1,200 feet overlooking the Wilds' managed animal areas while creating a creepy decoration for your home, looking at animals rarely seen in the wild, and learning about what makes these unique animals so important.

Visitors of all ages will have the opportunity to use a microscope to: determine if a bee is a male or female; figure out how clean our water is by observing the tiny creatures that live in our streams; and discover what animals clean up the planet.

All participants can take home a craft and activity sheet to continue their exploration of creepy crawlies.
