Bactrian Camel
Camelus bactrianus
Status: Endangered (USFWS)
Range: Mongolia
Two large humps of stored fat are one of the distinguishing characteristics of this species. This fat allows the camel to survive long periods without food and water. With less than 1,000 wild Bactrian camels left, these are one of the most severely threatened large mammal species due to hybridization with domestic camels, habitat loss, and hunting. Scientists from the Wilds have been working in Mongolia to survey the remaining populations of wild Bactrian camels.
